Online Ordering Website for Restaurants in the UK: Wix vs Shopify vs a White-Label App

Online Ordering Website for Restaurants in the UK: Wix vs Shopify vs a White-Label App

Most UK restaurant owners who want orders on their own website start with a name they already know: Wix or Shopify. Both will put a menu and a card checkout online in an afternoon. The question is what happens when a delivery order arrives and there is no driver, the till cannot see online orders, or you want an app of your own. This guide puts the three side by side for a UK takeaway, every price quoted from the vendor’s own page with the date it was checked. Aexir sells the white-label option, so we concede where Wix and Shopify win, and on card rates they do.

Short answer: Wix or Shopify is the right call for a brochure website with simple collection ordering, and both charge less per card payment than Aexir (Shopify Basic 2% + 25p, Wix Payments 2.1% + 20p, Aexir 2.5% + 30p). A white-label app is the right call once you need a branded iOS and Android app, delivery drivers per order, a till that takes restaurant orders or QR table ordering in one fee: Aexir’s Web plan is £30 a month ex VAT, app plans £30, £40 and £50.

An online ordering website for a restaurant is a site where customers choose from your menu, pay by card and pick collection or delivery, with the order arriving with you directly rather than through a marketplace. Wix and Shopify are general website builders with restaurant ordering added through an app, while a white-label restaurant platform supplies the ordering website, a branded native app, the till and the delivery handling as one service under your own name.

How we compared them

Every Wix and Shopify figure below was read from the vendor’s own page on 20 October 2026: shopify.com/uk/pricing, shopify.com/uk/pos/pricing, apps.shopify.com/zapiet-eats, wix.com/plans and the Wix help centre (Wix Payments fees, POS Register, DoorDash Drive, branded app plan). Where a figure is not published we say so. Two cautions: Wix shows US dollar prices "for reference only", so we quote those rather than invent a sterling figure; Shopify quotes pounds but does not say whether VAT is included.

Who each option is actually for

Wix

Wix is a website builder with a restaurant ordering app, Wix Restaurants Orders, free to install and described by Wix as "commission-free" (wix.com/app-market, checked on 20 October 2026). It covers pickup, delivery areas and dine-in with QR codes, and needs a plan that supports payments, Core or above, which the help centre does not price. A branded native app is a separate Mobile App Premium plan with no published price.

Shopify

Shopify is an e-commerce platform. Its UK "sell food online" page covers food products in general, baked goods, coffee and meat, and does not mention restaurant POS, table ordering or drivers (shopify.com/uk/restaurant-online-ordering, checked on 20 October 2026). Restaurant ordering in practice means an App Store app such as Zapiet Eats, $49.99 a month for 250 orders then $0.10 per order, billed in US dollars. Shopify Payments is available in the UK with no third-party transaction fee.

A white-label restaurant app

A white-label platform is built for food rather than retail. With Aexir that means a branded ordering website, your own iOS and Android app, POS on the Go (a till in any browser), delivery drivers per order, QR table ordering, loyalty and push notifications, for a flat monthly fee at published prices. You give up the general-purpose builder: no merchandise store, no app marketplace. The wider field is in our UK ordering provider guide.

Wix and Shopify figures checked on 20 October 2026 at wix.com/plans, support.wix.com (Wix Payments fees, POS Register, DoorDash Drive, branded app plan), shopify.com/uk/pricing, shopify.com/uk/pos/pricing and apps.shopify.com/zapiet-eats. Aexir from aexir.com/pricing, ex VAT. The £25 row is our arithmetic.

The card rates are the honest headline. On a £25 order Shopify Basic costs 75p, Wix Payments about 73p and Aexir about 93p: across 500 card orders a month, roughly £87.50 more with Aexir than Shopify Basic and about £100 more than Wix. Aexir’s monthly fee has to earn that back through what the builders leave out.

What a takeaway loses on a generic builder

No native app of your own

Shopify does not offer a merchant-branded app; its Shop app is "a shopping destination and delivery tracking app", a multi-merchant marketplace (help.shopify.com, Shop channel, checked on 20 October 2026). Wix does sell a branded app, but on a separate plan with no published price, with Apple’s $99 a year and Google Play’s $25 on top, and its mobile apps overview does not list food ordering among branded-app features. For a takeaway the app is where repeat orders live; the restaurant app builder guide covers every route to one.

No drivers per order

You can choose to have you or your staff deliver orders, or use a third-party delivery service.

Shopify Help Centre, local delivery, checked on 20 October 2026

Shopify’s local delivery sets a radius or postcodes, zone fees and a minimum order, then stops. Wix’s only driver integration is DoorDash Drive, which Wix says "is only available in the United States and Canada"; otherwise "you can choose to deliver orders yourself within a specific radius or area" (support.wix.com, checked on 20 October 2026). A UK takeaway on either platform employs its own drivers or turns delivery off; a platform built for food books drivers per order.

A till that cannot see the orders

Currently, the Wix POS Register solution (POS) tablet solution for physical stores can only be used to sell Wix Stores products or Wix Bookings services.

Wix Help Centre, POS Register feature request, checked on 20 October 2026

Integrating the Wix tablet till with Wix Restaurants is a feature request on which Wix is "collecting votes"; the workaround is a phone running the Wix app, with no mention of kitchen printing, table management or dine-in tabs. Shopify POS is built for retail: in a January 2025 community thread, still active in July 2026, a restaurant owner asked for table management and an automatic service charge and was told neither is native, with hospitality tills suggested instead. Food modifier requests date back to July and October 2024, and POS Pro is £69 a month per location. The UK restaurant POS buyer’s guide covers the alternatives; Aexir’s POS on the Go is included on the Web and Pro plans.

Modifiers, dine-in and loyalty

On Wix’s App Market a review from 17 April 2026 says you "cannot add modifiers to variations", so toppings cannot cost more on a large pizza, and one from 14 July 2026 says dine-in orders still force a mandatory address at checkout; the app is rated 3.4 out of 5 from 37 reviews (checked on 20 October 2026). On Shopify, an October 2024 community thread says QR table ordering, waiter calls, delivery and loyalty "will require a custom set up" and third-party apps. Loyalty does not appear in the Wix Restaurants Orders or Zapiet Eats listings either, so marketing to regulars means another subscription. Aexir includes loyalty, push notifications and QR table ordering; see the loyalty programme ideas guide and the QR table ordering guide.

Where Wix and Shopify genuinely win

  • Card fees: Shopify Basic 2% + 25p and Grow 1.7% + 25p, Wix Payments 2.1% + 20p, all below Aexir’s 2.5% + 30p. In person, Shopify Basic and Wix both charge 1.7% with no fixed fee.
  • Entry price: Shopify Basic at £19 a month on annual billing, or Wix Core (about $29 USD reference) plus the free Restaurants Orders app, match or undercut Aexir’s £30 ex VAT if you need no app, drivers or till.
  • Wix Restaurants Orders is free to install and described by Wix as commission-free, and Wix offers UK tap to pay and a POS Register, so its gaps are integration and price transparency rather than absence.
  • Shopify Payments has no third-party fee in the UK, there is a 3-day trial then £1 a month for 3 months, and the App Store includes purpose-built restaurant ordering.
  • Both are full website builders with templates, SEO tools and 24/7 support, can sell non-food products, which a dedicated takeaway platform cannot, and are names owners already know.

When Wix or Shopify is the right call

  • You mainly need a website (menu, hours, photos, a bookings link) with modest collection ordering on top, delivered by your own staff if at all.
  • You sell products as well as meals: sauces, merchandise, hampers, coffee beans. Shopify in particular is built for that.
  • Your average order is high and your order count low, so the card rate, where both builders are cheaper, matters more than the monthly fee.

When a white-label app is the right call

  • You want your own app on the App Store and Google Play, under your name, with push notifications you send yourself.
  • You deliver and do not want to employ drivers, or you want one till for online, phone and walk-in orders with food modifiers and QR table ordering.
  • You would rather one monthly fee at a published price than a plan, an ordering app, a POS tier and a branded-app plan, one priced in dollars and one unpublished.

What Aexir charges, in full

Aexir’s prices are published. The Web plan is £30 a month ex VAT: branded ordering website plus POS on the Go. Starter at £30 is the branded iOS and Android app; Plus at £40 is app plus website; Pro at £50 is app, website and POS on the Go. Additional locations are £1 a day. Card payments are 2.5% + 30p, above both Wix and Shopify. Delivery drivers per order, QR table ordering, loyalty and push notifications are part of the platform; the pricing page shows what each plan includes.

Whether the fee is worth it depends on your volume and what you pay the marketplaces today. The savings calculator takes your weekly Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats orders and shows what a flat monthly fee at published prices would mean, or run it here.

Common questions answered.

For food products and simple collection ordering, yes: Basic is £25 a month (£19 annual) with Shopify Payments at 2% + 25p, checked on 20 October 2026. For a takeaway, Shopify itself describes the gaps: no branded app, no drivers and a retail POS without native table management, and restaurant ordering needs an app such as Zapiet Eats at $49.99 a month.

Wix describes its Restaurants Orders app as commission-free and free to install (wix.com/app-market, checked on 20 October 2026). You pay for the Wix plan it needs, Core or above, with no published GBP price, plus Wix Payments at 2.1% + 20p per online card payment. The "service fee" in Wix Restaurants is one you add to customers’ orders, not a fee Wix takes.

Wix does not publish pound prices. Its plans page shows US dollar figures "for reference only" (Core about $29 a month, Business $39.77 on yearly billing, taxes excluded) and says the final price appears at checkout. A branded app is a separate Mobile App Premium plan with no published price, plus Apple’s $99 a year and Google Play’s $25.

Not from either platform. Wix’s only driver integration is DoorDash Drive, "only available in the United States and Canada"; otherwise you deliver within a radius yourself. Shopify’s local delivery says "you or your staff deliver orders, or use a third-party delivery service". Aexir books delivery drivers per order as part of the platform.

Wix’s POS Register "can only be used to sell Wix Stores products or Wix Bookings services"; restaurant integration is a feature request, with a phone running the Wix app as the workaround. Shopify POS is built for retail: POS Pro is £69 a month per location, and community threads ask for table management, service charges and food modifiers that are not native. Aexir’s POS on the Go is included on the Web and Pro plans.

Shopify and Wix. Shopify Grow is 1.7% + 25p, Shopify Basic 2% + 25p and Wix Payments 2.1% + 20p, against Aexir’s 2.5% + 30p, all checked on 20 October 2026. On a £25 order that is about 68p, 75p, 73p and 93p respectively. Aexir’s case rests on what the monthly fee includes, not on the card rate.
